Current Global Developments

In Malaysia and the globalised world today, the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity cannot be emphasised enough as our capacity to deal with globalised communications, international businesses and the local community requires a deeper understanding and respect for these diversities. The growing recognition of the importance of multilingualism and multiculturalism makes it imperative that these two aspects are given due emphasis in the teaching and learning of languages and indeed, even in thinking about academic language.

This calls for a reconceptualisation of the way language teaching and learning is conceived and accomplished as internationalization creates new challenges and demands that impact on classroom practices and our understanding of literacy. These new demands mean that we have to acknowledge, understand and account for these diversities because effective literacy instruction is built upon cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Understanding and respecting the array of different cultures and languages represented in our classrooms will help educators adopt strategies for teaching languages and literacy that will encourage and support student achievement.

The 6th ILLC will provide a common platform for educators, students, institutions and interested parties to present and discuss research, developments and innovations in the field of language teaching and learning.
